Boats, Schooners and Barges

At one time boats carrying freight contributed to the major activity on the Siuslaw River. According to vessel arrival and departure records, imports were primarily merchandise and machinery. Exports included lumber, salmon, hides, fruit, chittem bark, and butter. Business in winter decreased due to the difficulty of crossing the jetty bar in rough conditions.

Explore the museum’s marine exhibit and numerous photographs of boats, schooners and barges that frequented the Siuslaw River. The on-site William Kyle Library maintains files of vessels in the following searchable list. These files are available for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 to 3 p.m. Contact the library (541) 9777-7884 ext 1 for further information.
